An Oxnard man has landed in hot water after being accused of trying to beat the system. The Ventura County District Attorney's office charges Gonzalo Robles Zurita with workers’ compensation insurance fraud, claiming that he falsely reported an arm injury as occurring on the job back in 2022. According to the Ventura County District Attorney's office, Senior Deputy District Attorney Joann Roth, who is handling the case, asserts that Zurita also faces a felony charge for attempted perjury related to statements made under oath during his deposition.

Zurita made his first court appearance last Thursday, entering a not guilty plea to all charges. His allegedly fraudulent claim initiated a State of California workers' compensation claim, entitling him to benefits exceeding $20,000, as per the Ventura County District Attorney's office. However, an investigation by the State Compensation Insurance Fund's Special Investigation Unit questioned the validity of Zurita’s claims about the date, time, and circumstances of the arm injury.

In light of these developments, Zurita is now awaiting an early disposition conference, set for September 22, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 12. A preliminary hearing has also been scheduled for September 24, at 8:15 a.m., in courtroom 14. Despite the serious nature of the accusations, Zurita was released on his own recognizance and, if convicted, could face up to three years and six months in jail, as reported by the Ventura County District Attorney's office.

The economic implications of such fraud cases are significant. The California Department of Insurance (CDI) estimates that workers' compensation fraud costs the state between $1 billion $3 billion annually. This crime burden falls not just on the shoulders of insurers but also impacts honest businesses and consumers due to increased premiums and, indirectly, the prices for goods and services. The Ventura County District Attorney's office urges those knowledgeable of fraudulent injury claims or uninsured businesses to contact Ventura County's Workers’ Compensation Insurance Fraud Unit.
