A 13-year-old boy was arrested in Pierce County after sheriff's deputies investigated a tip about threats of a school shooting and found multiple firearms at his residence. According to The Seattle Times, the arrest occurred early yesterday, with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office receiving a report on Friday regarding the teen's threats to commit a school shooting.
Swift action was needed to ensure that potentially grave consequences were stopped before they could be put into motion. As reported by KOMO News, the SWAT team and sheriff’s deputies performed a seizure of person warrant at the boy's home where they found a significant number of both secured and unsecured guns, as well as loaded magazines with writings related to school shootings.
The boy, who was not currently enrolled in any school district but had previously attended in the Franklin Pierce School District up until 2021, was booked into Remann Hall Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation also yielded materials like clothing and writings that suggested a mass shooting was being planned, detailed in a release from the Pierce County sheriff’s office.
A deep concern washed over the local community as word of the arrest spread. "There was definitely some thought put into harming people," Deputy Carly Cappetto told KIRO 7. Neighbors like Alleonah Perea expressed their shock, with Perea remarking, "I am kinda shocked at the fact that he’s 13-years-old and has access to all these guns." The swift police action was a response to a community now forced to grapple with what might have unfolded had the threats turned into action.
Further interviews are expected to take place as deputies seek to understand the full extent of the situation. As it stands, the teen's parents do not face any repercussions, and the investigation is stated to be ongoing. In recognition of the urgency and dedication evident in this case, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office thanked those agencies and personnel involved for their tireless work, acknowledging in a statement that their efforts "bringing closure to something that could have harmed our community," as provided by official communications to KOMO News.
