Close call for Milwaukee as city offices narrowly escape a major financial hit thanks to the swift actions of the police department. An attempted wire fraud that targeted the city's coffers to the tune of $460,000 was thwarted, and Alderman Peter Burgelis is amplifying calls for tighter security and complete transparency, as reported by the City of Milwaukee.
In what could have been a serious blow to the public trust, the Milwaukee Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit intervened just in time to recover the stolen funds. Speaking on the severity of the incident, Alderman Burgelis stated, “This was not just an accounting error, this was wire fraud.” The alderman is pushing for a rigorous review of the systems in place — ones that narrowly missed being outwitted by fraudsters — that protect taxpayers' money, as noted by the City of Milwaukee.
According to a statement obtained by the City of Milwaukee, Alderman Burgelis expressed gratitude to the MPD’s Financial Crimes Unit for their adept work. More than just a verbal pat on the back, the alderman is advocating for a serious revamp of internal controls within the Comptroller’s and Treasurer’s Offices to ensure such a close shave never occurs again.
Echoing the sentiments of many taxpayers, accountability is the drumbeat to which the alderman marches. “Closing the gaps that allowed this wire fraud to nearly succeed is the first step,” Burgelis announced, underscoring the importance of not merely patching over the problem but overhauling the system to offer Milwaukee residents the confidence in fiscal security they rightfully demand. Deserving of transparency and oversight, the city's citizens are owed a fortified guard against such fraudulent attacks, and on this front, the alderman promises, “Accountability is non-negotiable,” as per the City of Milwaukee.
