The Powerball jackpot has soared to a staggering $1.3 billion after Monday's drawing failed to produce a winner, positioning the next prize as potentially the fifth-largest in the history of the game. The numbers that were drawn on Monday, as reported by FOX LA, were 8, 23, 25, 40, 53, with the Powerball being 5.

Despite the absence of a grand prize winner, one Southland resident has reason to celebrate after purchasing a ticket worth nearly $1.38 million. This ticket, according to ABC7, matched five of the six numbers and was sold at the 76 Station at 14478 Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks. The owner of the ticket has yet to come forward to claim their windfall.

As anticipation builds for the next drawing, scheduled for Wednesday night, lottery officials have noted that the estimated $1.3 billion jackpot could still increase depending on ticket sales. FOX LA reports that if won, the jackpot could be claimed either as a lump sum of $589 million or in annual payments spread over 30 years.

The current jackpot run began after the last win in California on May 31, with the cycle now reaching 40 drawings without a top-tier prize winner. Notably, the longest streak of Powerball drawings without a jackpot victor was 42 consecutive draws, setting a tense stage for the upcoming draw. Winners, as they consider their options, will choose to either take the immediate cash or an annuitized prize estimated at $1.3 billion, as per ABC7, before taxes are applied to their newfound fortunes.
