A Queens woman faces a litany of charges in a case highlighting the brutal realities of sex trafficking in New York City. Valezka Echeverrias, 31, of Jackson Heights has been indicted on charges including sex trafficking and grand larceny for her alleged crimes along bustling Roosevelt Avenue. As reported by the Queens District Attorney's Office, Echeverrias has been accused of forcing women into prostitution and extorting them for money.

According to the indictment, Echeverrias' activities came under scrutiny when it was discovered that she had allegedly coerced a woman, whom she brought over from Mexico, into paying her $800 a night through engagement in prostitution. The indictment also indicates the victim was subjected to physical abuse, and coerced into robbing clients to meet the daily financial demands set by the defendant. Moreover, Echeverrias is accused of extorting another victim, in 2023, by threatening her with violence unless she paid $100 a day.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stated, "Human trafficking is a violent, dehumanizing trade that exploits and destroys lives." She further noted that "The defendant is accused of terrorizing numerous victims along Roosevelt Avenue, forcing them to engage in sex acts and profiting from their misery." Echeverrias remains in custody following her previous indictment in November 2024 on similar charges relating to the exploitation of a transgender woman, the Queens District Attorney's Office noted.

The severity of the accusations is reflected in the potential consequences, with Echeverrias facing up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top count. Supreme Court Justice Peter Vallone has set a court return date for September 18. In the courtroom, justice will seek to determine the veracity of claims that, tragically showcase how the flesh of some is bartered, and barters, under coercion, in the shadows of Queens.

Prosecution of the case is being led by Assistant District Attorney Felicia Thomas of the District Attorney's Human Trafficking Bureau with the oversight of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Investigations Gerard A. Brave.
