Seven juveniles who had escaped from Holly Hill Children's Hospital in Raleigh were located and returned to the facility after a multi-agency police search on Sunday night, officials said. According to the News & Observer, the teens managed to leave the psychiatric hospital amidst a reported disturbance that began close to 8 p.m. It is still unclear how the escape unfolded, but the police response was quick and involved the use of dogs and drones to track down the juveniles.
Local law enforcement received notice around 8:02 p.m. regarding the unrest at the hospital's South Campus and subsequently discovered the situation with the missing teens. The Raleigh Police Department teamed up with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, the State Capitol Police Department, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol to successfully mount a search operation. The combined efforts to swiftly contain and resolve the situation clearly illustrate the efficacy of inter-agency cooperation in the face of a potential crisis. Despite initial concerns, the Raleigh Police Department confirmed that the teens "were not considered armed and dangerous and did not pose a threat to the surrounding community," as highlighted by WRAL.
While the specific causes of the disturbance remain under investigation, Holly Hill Hospital is known for providing both inpatient and outpatient services for psychiatric and addictive diseases, treating vulnerable populations who require a secure and therapeutic environment.
The area around the hospital, particularly around Sunnybrook Road north of Poole Road, was the focus of the search, as indicated by a statement from the Raleigh Police Department, relayed through CBS 17. With the juveniles back in the care of the hospital staff, questions regarding security measures and protocols are expected to be addressed by the facility's administration.
