A Redford man has been charged with the murders of his sister and nephew in Hazel Park, with the arraignment set for today, as reported by the Hazel Park Police Department. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Ladamien Keith Hill, is accused of the double slaying, which occurred earlier in the week at a residence on Berdeno Avenue.
According to CBS News Detroit, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office has authorized two counts of first-degree murder against Hill, brother of the 41-year-old victim Linda Hill, and uncle to her son, 12-year-old Kardi Jackson. The young boy was a student at Hazel Park Schools. Their bodies, discovered with their throats slashed, prompted a community vigil and balloon release in their memory on Wednesday evening.
FOX 2 Detroit reports that the Hazel Park Police Department updated that the motive behind the murders is currently unknown. Hill was apprehended Tuesday evening in Pontiac, putting an end to a brief hunt following the gruesome findings on Monday night.
The tragedy has elicited a response from local officials, with the HPS Superintendent Amy Wilcox and Hazel Park City Manager Edward Klobucher releasing a statement, obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, that reads, "Please take a moment to hug your children and remind them how much they are loved. Encourage them to be especially compassionate and supportive of their classmates, as you never know what someone else is going through." Additionally, Prosecutor Karen McDonald was quoted by WXYZ as expressing sorrow over the incident, highlighting the shock it has brought upon the community.
