The City of Reno is calling upon its citizens to voice their opinions on the subject of live entertainment regulations, with a series of virtual meetings lined up for public engagement. A recent report shared on the city's official news platform highlights the need for public input, the ideas from which will influence upcoming Reno City Council deliberations on potential zoning code amendments.
During a Reno City Council meeting on June 11, 2025, officials initiated a dialogue on existing codes governing live entertainment. Responding to the directive to gather public perspective on subjects such as security plans, and the public hearing process, Mayor Hillary Schieve emphasized the value of community contribution, stating, "We understand that live entertainment is a top priority for local businesses looking to provide more engaging experiences for their customers." Adding, "It’s important that our community members share their perspectives on the matter, and we encourage everyone to participate in these virtual feedback meetings," as reported on the city's news page.
The current landscape of live entertainment rules has created discrepancies, where older establishments can boast unrestricted live performances, while newer ones face more stringent stipulations through a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). Critical issues up for discussion include whether live entertainment past 11 p.m. should continue to require a CUP, or if the city should modify security plan stipulations based on the type of business. Furthermore, the possibility of stricter enforcement measures which could lead to the revocation of a Cabaret License, is on the agenda.
The city has laid out a schedule for the virtual meetings, which are set to take place on Monday, September 29 at 9 a.m., Tuesday, September 30 at 12 p.m., and Tuesday, October 2 at 6 p.m., each aiming to cater to a wide array of schedules. Interested individuals can register for the meetings through links provided on the city’s official website. For those unable to attend, the sessions will be recorded and uploaded for subsequent viewing, and feedback may still be submitted via the Live Entertainment Input Form.
