Montgomery County cyclists and residents are encouraged to donate unused bicycles for a charitable cause. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold its annual Bicycle Donation Drive on Friday, Oct. 3. Community members can drop off gently used bikes between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. outside the Montgomery County Council Office Building Garage, located at the intersection of E. Jefferson and Monroe Street in Rockville.

This year, the donation event is not only expected to support local residents in need, but also aims to extend its reach internationally. "Donating your unused bike is a simple way to make a real difference in the life of someone in need," said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. The MCDOT and partnering organizations will to quickly refurbish the bikes, making them suitable for people requiring reliable transportation options for daily activities like work or school, as reported by Montgomery County.

According to MCDOT guidelines, donated bicycles should be in good working order or require only minor repairs to ensure recipients can use them without significant maintenance issues. Volunteers from the Rockville Bike Hub will handle the refurbishment process. Once repaired, the bikes will be distributed through the MCDOT Bike Match Program and the Rockville Terrific Kids program. Additionally, Bikes for the World will take some of the collected bikes to support communities internationally. Bicycles that cannot be repaired will be dismantled, and their parts will be recycled responsibly.

In addition to the environmental and societal benefits brought by this annual event, the MCDOT has highlighted the persistent need for more bicycles. MCDOT Director Chris Conklin expressed this concern, stating, "The Bike Match program has provided bikes to more than 870 Montgomery County residents since the program began in June 2020." He added, "However, the need is still great. We currently have more than 400 people on our waiting list who are hoping to receive a bike," according to a statement obtained by Montgomery County. The aim of the event is to collect enough bicycles to meet the current demand.

If you cannot donate a bike but would still like to contribute, monetary donations in the form of checks payable to the Rockville Bike Hub will be accepted at the event. Donors can give their contributions to staff and receive receipts for tax deduction purposes. Community groups, including schools, places of worship, and neighborhood organizations, are encouraged to organize group bike drives and bring their collected donations to Rockville on the day of the event.
