In Roseville, California, the police department geared up to celebrate National Police K-9 Day, an occasion dedicated to honoring the service of K-9 units. The Roseville Police Department took this opportunity to acknowledge the skilled four-legged officers and their human partners for their dedication to keeping the community safe. These K-9s, specially trained in a variety of skills including tracking, officer protection, apprehension, and the detection of drugs and firearms, are integral to the force's operations.
According to a social media post made by the City of Roseville Police Department, these K-9 units are active participants in the safety of the city, "nearly 1,000 calls for service each year." They maintain a rigorous training schedule, training two days a month, in addition to their routine patrol duties and collaboration with the SWAT Team. On top of their patrol duties, K-9s and their handlers are also familiar faces in local schools and community events, where they perform demonstrations that showcase their specialized training and skill sets.
The role of K-9s extends beyond the utility of their specific training; they contribute greatly to officer safety and improve the outcome of high-stress calls. The close partnership between K-9 and handler is critical in diffusing situations that could otherwise escalate. The Police Department’s post highlighted this connection as a "unique bond and partnership" that ties them together not only as partners but also as members of their human families.
Recognition was given to individual members of the Roseville Police Department's K-9 team, including K-9 Juice with Officer Lawley, K-9 Mateo with Officer Gruchow, K-9 Rudi with Officer Mara, K-9 Ciro with Officer Nuevo, and K-9 Bordy with Officer Bonner. The team is led by Sergeant Gregg Cole, and a special mention was given to Butter, the Crisis Comfort Canine aiding in mental health, victim advocacy, and critical incident debriefings alongside RPD officers. "Thank you to the entire RPD K-9 team for keeping our community safe!" the Police Department wrote on Facebook in recognition of their service.
