The expansion of the Round Rock Public Safety Training Center is moving forward, following the city council's unanimous vote on Wednesday, September 24, to award a $15.1 million contract to Adolfson & Peterson Construction. The City Council, as reported by the City of Round Rock's news release, has given the go-ahead for improvements to the facility that provides educational and practical training ground for the city's fire and police departments.

The enhanced training center's expansion was part of the bond election approved by voters in 2023. The forthcoming additions include a new classroom building, expansions to the main building, and the construction of a new Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) track. Incorrectly, there will also be another skills pad designed for fire department extrication exercises, storage sheds for training vehicles and equipment, and a robust backup generator.

The main building will gain an additional 6,602 square feet for meeting rooms and space for fire training personnel. A 4,700 square-foot classroom building is also on the drawing boards, featuring two classrooms equipped with necessary amenities such as restrooms, storage, and a kitchenette. Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects, who originally designed the training center, are responsible for the design of this expansion phase as well.

Details about the new EVOC track and the second skills pad were scarce, but the improvements are intended to enhance the comprehensive training program offered at the center. In addition to existing facilities, which include an indoor tactical firing range and a five-story burn tower, the new infrastructure will bolster the quality of training for emergency responders. More classroom space is particularly vital as the departments expand and the need for ongoing education becomes increasingly essential.

The initial training center first opened its doors in 2018, after receiving the green light from voters in the 2013 bond election. Since then, it has become a central hub for the development of the city's public safety capabilities. This latest expansion is a continuation of Round Rock's commitment to equip its first responders with the resources they need to keep the community safe and handle every potential scenario with skill and precision.
