The San Antonio Police Department is currently looking into what appears to be a human smuggling operation discovered on the city's South Side. KSAT-12 reports the situation unfolded following a welfare check initiated just after 5 p.m. yesterday, where witnesses observed several individuals fleeing an 18-wheeler near Quintana and Plumnear Roads.

As details emerge, it appears that some of these individuals were seen entering other vehicles, in a desperate attempt to scatter from the scene. When law enforcement officials arrived, the truck in question was nowhere to be found, but several people in the vicinity were detained. So far, injuries, or deaths haven't been reported in this incident. The SAPD has enlisted the help of Homeland Security to probe deeper into the circumstances of this case.

Adding to the complexity of the scene is its proximity to the location of the country's deadliest human smuggling tragedy back in 2022, which unfolds a layer of historical trauma over the current investigation. According to KENS 5, after the people escaped from the truck, some were spotted running toward a local mobile home park and hopping into various autos.

Authorities mobilized quickly, with the local police canvassing the area and conducting aerial searches by helicopter. The operation resulted in the detention of between five and seven individuals as of 7:30 p.m., including those believed to be behind the wheel of the tractor-trailer. At this moment, it's uncertain what charges police might be contemplating against the suspects.
