A newborn found in a trash can has led to serious charges against a Lee County woman. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call on September 13 reporting a woman lying in a yard in the Broadway area. They found the woman and an infant in a nearby trash can and provided lifesaving aid until emergency medical services arrived.
The mother, identified as 29-year-old Mishayla Elisabeth Iles of Sanford, NC, was taken with the child to the hospital for treatment. CBS17 reports that after being released from medical care, Iles was arrested on Wednesday and charged with attempted first-degree murder and concealing the birth of a child. Court records show she was held on a $1 million secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 8.
ABC11 reports that Lee County Sheriff Brian Estes commended the swift actions and lifesaving measures of the deputies and first responders involved. The sheriff’s office says the infant remains hospitalized in stable condition.
WRAL reports that Iles is being held at the Lee County Jail without bond. The investigation is ongoing and further details are expected to emerge ahead of Iles’ court appearance.
