The familiar route for many residents and those passing through Schellville will face a month-long detour as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) embarks on a rail replacement project for the aging Arroyo Seco Bridge. To bring the near-century-old safety barriers up to current standards, Caltrans has announced a 30-day full closure of State Route 12/121 starting October 1 at the stroke of midnight and extending until the pre-dawn of October 31, Caltrans reports.
Traversing Schellville Creek, the two-lane Arroyo Seco Bridge, located just east of Eighth Street, has stood since 1923; its railings, which act as crucial guardrails for vehicles, are original to its construction, necessitating the upgrade both for modern traffic demands and vehicle safety. During the closure, westbound vehicles will be routed onto Napa Road, Eighth Street, and rerouted back onto Route 12/121. This same route will also serve eastbound travelers only in the opposite direction, creating a loop for all those disrupted by the works.
October was handpicked for the said maintenance window, cited as the most apropos time due to favorable weather conditions and environmental compliance measures. While the Arroyo Seco Bridge sees its necessary facelift, Caltrans is also eyeing the Yellow Creek Bridge on Route 121 for similar maintenance work. Preliminary schedules hint at a late 2025 or early 2026 start date for the railing replacements there.
