Recent incidents of violence on the outskirts of the Maryland State Fair raise concerns about safety and security at the popular event. A harrowing account emerged of a 16-year-old girl being attacked by a group of individuals near the fairgrounds, as captured in a video that has since spurred an investigation by the Baltimore County Police. The victim's mother, Ariel Mason, expressed her dismay at witnessing the altercation, telling FOX Baltimore, "Oh, my goodness, this the first time I’ve actually watched the whole video." Mason detailed her efforts to reach out to the assailants' parents via social media in search of answers.
According to police reports, a male juvenile was arrested for aggressive conduct toward another juvenile in the presence of officers at the main gate, and a female was detained for assaulting an auxiliary officer who suffered minor injuries. While the Maryland State Fair management stresses the importance of safety, with protocols including the ejection of unaccompanied minors, additional steps may be necessary considering these recent disturbances, leaving many to question the effectiveness.
Another violent occurrence unfolded over the weekend involving a group of young people that escalated into arrests and inflicted minor injuries on officers. While the incident did not unfold within the fairgrounds proper, it has impacted the perception and comfort level of fairgoers. Cari Rodney, who has been a consistent visitor to the fair for over five years, admitted to WMAR 2 News, "This is the first year that I feel like I was a little hesitant to come." Meanwhile, another parent, Tarsha Grant, maintains a vigilant yet undeterred approach, remarking, "I'm not scared, concerned, but I'm not worried about anything."
With police still reviewing surveillance footage, the question of how safety measures will evolve in response to these confrontations lingers for those who consider the fair a seasonal highlight.
