U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, has urged her Republican colleagues to address the impending expiration of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Enhanced Premium Tax Credits. She warns that without action, families in Wisconsin and across the country could face higher health care costs. In an press release, Senator Baldwin stated that if Republicans do not act, insurance premiums for more than 20 million Americans could increase by an average of 75%.
Baldwin’s exposé in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reveals that the expiration of these tax credits will not only create financial uncertainty for 270,000 Wisconsinites but also make health care inaccessible for four million Americans. Her concerns are illustrated through individual stories like that of Gigi, a new small business owner who relies on these tax credits to afford her health insurance. "If the GOP takes these tax breaks away, her premiums will increase by over $350 each month," Baldwin said in a press release. At the same time, Keith, an insurance agency owner from Marathon City, revealed that his family’s insurance premium could increase threefold—an alarming possibility shared by his farmer and self-employed contractor clients.
On the campaign trail, President Trump promised to lower costs immediately, but Baldwin contends that despite four chances to fulfill this promise, Republicans have consistently voted against extending the ACA tax credits. Instead, she claims their focus has been on cutting taxes for large corporations and billionaires. With significant premium increases looming, Baldwin is advocating for a solution through the upcoming government funding bill. She warns that Americans enrolled in ACA plans will soon receive notices about expected premium hikes for the coming year, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Despite her strong criticism, Senator Baldwin’s primary call is for bipartisan cooperation and practical solutions to ensure affordable healthcare. She emphasizes the urgency of action, pointing out that working Americans seek a fair system rather than handouts. This message resonates with middle- and lower-income Americans who are concerned about the possible expiration of the ACA tax credits, which could jeopardize the affordable healthcare coverage millions depend on.
