Hefty fines are on the horizon for Maryland drivers who flirt with the speed limit. Beginning on October 1, fines for speed camera violations will see a significant increase. According to FOX Baltimore, under House Bill 182, fines for going as little as 12 mph over the speed limit will start at $40 and can increase to $425 if the driver is caught going 40 mph or more over the limit.

While the decision has ruffled some feathers among residents, officials insist the move is meant to reinforce safer streets. "Speed cameras are there for a reason to keep people safe," a resident from Baltimore County, named Jim, told FOX Baltimore. Another resident, Victor from Baltimore, feels the gouge, saying, "I think they are already ripping me off, so they are ripping me off even more."

The structure of the new fines, as CBS News Baltimore reported, sees increments across various speeding brackets, where those caught 12-15 mph over the limit will be fined $40, while those 40+ mph over face the maximum fine of $425.

The fiscal implications for the state are clear, but the exact figures remain unknown. The bill likely means local revenue will go up, though the exact numbers are not clear, as indicated by the fiscal note. Data from Howard County point to an upward trend in citations and revenue, with more than $1.1 million collected in fines in 2024, resulting in a net revenue of $34,959 after expenses, which are earmarked for public safety purposes.

To evaluate the effectiveness and best practices of speed monitoring systems, especially in school zones, the State Highway Administration is required to form a working group to present findings and recommendations to the governor and the General Assembly by December 1.
