The City of Sterling Heights has snagged a spot in an elite group of municipalities tackling the nation’s housing crunch. Chosen as one of 16 participants in the Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge, the city will be embarking on an 18-month journey toward housing innovation in collaboration with the National League of Cities (NLC) and the American Planning Association (APA).
According to a recent announcement from the City of Sterling Heights, this challenge is all about implementing strategies to increase housing stock while preserving what makes Sterling Heights’ single-family neighborhoods tick. Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor was quoted as saying, "This recognition places Sterling Heights on the national stage as a leader in addressing housing challenges." The city aims to create more inclusive and affordable living spaces for its residents at varying life stages, using the resources and guidance provided by the Challenge.
City Planner Dr. Jake Parcell highlighted Sterling Heights’ commitment to sustainable growth, noting the value of the partnership in the Challenge. "By taking part in this challenge, we’ll be able to build on our momentum, strengthen partnerships, and accelerate solutions that increase housing opportunities for current and future residents," Parcell told the City of Sterling Heights. Participation calls for action and measurable outcomes, rooted in the use of a provided playbook focused on solutions, systems, and partnerships to meet their housing objectives.
