The Sterling Heights Police Department is opening its doors to the community through its Citizen’s Police Academy, a program designed to enlighten residents about the inner workings of local law enforcement. According to the City of Sterling Heights, this 30-hour course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the department’s personnel, policies, and daily operations.

The Citizen’s Academy is organized as a series of weekly three-hour classes covering a wide range of topics, from drunk driving procedures to juvenile law. The program aims to attract a diverse group of participants, including doctors, homemakers, and students. It offers an opportunity to learn about law enforcement processes alongside officers’ firsthand experiences. The initiative primarily targets residents over 18 who live or work in the Sterling Heights area.

At its core, the program seeks to increase police awareness and reduce suspicions and misconceptions while strengthening the relationship between the police and the community. By encouraging interaction and feedback from residents, the department emphasizes its commitment to transparency and mutual understanding. Participants will take part in lectures, demonstrations, tours, and practical experiences, with a particular focus on the patrol division, the most visible aspect of police work.

A key feature of the Sterling Heights Citizen’s Academy is its accessibility; interested individuals can obtain application forms either at the police department or by downloading them online. Completed applications can be submitted by email or dropped off in person. SHPD Sgt. Michael Zawojsky emphasized that applicants are responsible for ensuring their applications are submitted to have the opportunity to engage directly with law enforcement. The fall session is set to run from September 23 to November 25, with classes held on Tuesday evenings.
