A low-speed car chase through the streets of Los Angeles on Monday night ended with a suspect's arrest after an hour-long standoff with police. The grey Infiniti, reported stolen, was tailed by the LAPD after a pursuit began around 9 p.m. through the neighborhoods of East Hollywood and Los Feliz. According to KTLA, the chase included the deployment of spike strips, which the suspect continued to drive over, causing significant damage to the vehicle's tires.
Despite the vehicle's slow movement, the driver almost had an encounter with a pedestrian, as noted by NBC Los Angeles. The pursuit reached a crescendo when, after running over a spike strip and dragging it, the police performed a PIT maneuver that disabled the Infiniti around Los Feliz Boulevard and Serrano Avenue. The driver then barricaded himself inside the car, which led to a standoff of about 40 minutes, before the driver surrendered.
LAPD tactics escalated when attempts to safely apprehend the driver intensified. Officers shattered a window of the SUV and released a gas canister, per KTLA's report. This act prompted the suspect, appearing disoriented after briefly exiting the vehicle earlier in the standoff, to finally exit the vehicle.
The chase not only involved multiple encounters with spike strips but also showcased a failed PIT maneuver in Hollywood, which the suspect briefly overcame before their eventual arrest. Details from ABC7 indicate that the suspect's flight continued on, shredding tires following an initial PIT maneuver, and didn’t conclude until after a second, successful immobilization by police.
Ultimately, after officers used less-than-lethal rounds, the standoff came to an end. CBS Los Angeles reported the suspect was taken into custody, marking the culmination of a pursuit that, while slow, held the rapt attention of onlookers and law enforcement across Los Angeles.
