Over at the Hidalgo International Bridge, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made a notable arrest over the weekend, nabbing a man with a warrant out for sexual assault of a child. According to the CBP, their vigilant officers referred Jaime Maldonado, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, to secondary inspection while he was on foot on Saturday. This led to the discovery of Maldonado's outstanding felony warrant from Hidalgo County.
"CBP officers continue to maintain their vigilance and that dedication to duty resulted in this significant apprehension for a man wanted on an outstanding warrant for a crime of a sexual nature involving a child," Port Director Carlos Rodriguez told the CBP; the officers use biometric verification and cross-reference with law enforcement databases to confirm suspects’ identities and check for outstanding warrants.
Following the arrest, the accused was handed over to local authorities, the Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies, to face the charges brought against him. The National Crime Information Center (NCIC), which is an instrumental database for law enforcement agencies, played a crucial role in this capture by providing the necessary information that linked Maldonado to the warrant for sexual assault of a child.
CBP officers have used the NCIC system to apprehend individuals wanted for various alleged crimes, including homicide, escape, money laundering, robbery, narcotics distribution, and sexual child abuse. Authorities emphasize that charges are allegations, and defendants, including Maldonado, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
