Downtown Syracuse's landscape continues to change with the recent grand opening of the INSPYRE Innovation Hub, a new 90,000-square-foot business incubator built at a cost of $32 million. The state-of-the-art space, heralded by Governor Kathy Hochul, aims to set up Central New York as a major player for innovative businesses in the 21st century. According to a statement obtained by the Governor's office, the expanded facility will serve as the cornerstone of the Syracuse Surge economic development strategy.
The hub itself, formerly known as The Tech Garden, has gained the distinction of being the largest business incubator in New York State, and this expansion is expected to bolster the regional economy. It now touts additional tenant offices for startups, coworking areas, and a new rooftop terrace. In addition to these upgrades, to more firmly plant its feet in the region, it also boasts an on-site mechanical overhaul and technological upgrades, as outlined in the Governor's announcement. CenterState CEO Acting President Ben Sio, expressed this sentiment, adding to the momentum, "Central New York's entrepreneurs deserve a facility that enables them to realize their dreams."
At the heart of INSPYRE's offerings is its flagship GENIUS NY program for the uncrewed systems and robotics industry, which has been fostering growth since 2017. The impressive numbers touted by the program include a near $24 million investment across 42 companies and upwards of $350 million raised in follow-on funding. The activity at INSPYRE indicates it is functioning as more than a collection of office spaces, serving as a base for developing tech ventures and contributing to the broader focus on innovation in Upstate New York.
Financing for the hub was partially provided through state initiatives, with Empire State Development allocating up to $16.6 million via the CNY Rising Upstate Revitalization Initiative. State officials, including senators and the local mayor, have consistently acknowledged the project’s potential to stimulate economic growth and promote a more inclusive regional economy. Assemblymember Pamela Hunter stated in the press release, "The INSPYRE Innovation Hub represents the best of what we can accomplish when we invest in people, ideas, and the future of our region." Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh acknowledged the hub as a critical entity for talent attraction and retention.
Additional information about INSPYRE’s offerings is available on its official website for those interested in getting involved.
