The city of Tampa celebrated the 95th birthday of Ray Charles by unveiling a new historical marker meant to honor the music pioneers who once graced Central Avenue. The marker stands as a testament to the area's cultural and musical significance, where Charles found his voice and American music was shaped by the talents of Black artists who frequented the "Chitlin Circuit" during segregation.
According to a statement obtained by tampa.gov, a collaboration between the City of Tampa and the Hillsborough County Historic Advisory Council made this commemoration possible. It showcases Central Avenue's historical roots as a once-vibrant hub for the African American community, providing a space for musical legends to perform and grow their craft. Charles recorded his first song, "I Found My Baby There," near Central Avenue in 1947, a place significantly linked to the singer's early career.
The marker was unveiled during a ceremony held at the Kid Mason Center, with attendees including Mayor Jane Castor and Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers. Remarkably, other Tampa legends were remembered besides Charles, such as Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday, musicians who contributed to the rich tapestry of American music and found a safe haven for their art on Central Avenue.
"Central Avenue was the heartbeat of a community and the birthplace of a sound that carried far beyond Tampa," Mayor Jane Castor told tampa.gov. She affirmed the city's commitment to preserving the history of Tampa's soul by remembering the stories and people that have allowed naturally to resonate with generations.
