In a significant move to combat crimes against animals, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced the formation of a task force dedicated to enforcing the federal Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act. This new coalition comprises both federal and local law enforcement agencies, set to sail on a mission of protecting our non-human companions from cruelty and exploitation. According to a press release from the Central District of California U.S. Attorney's Office, this initiative responds to a critical need for a coordinated effort against violations of animal rights, particularly within the expansive seven-county district home to some 20 million residents.

"Animal abuse is among the most heartbreaking and despicable type of crimes that law enforcement sees," Essayli said, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California. The new task force is launching into a realm of intervention that, up until now, seemed a periphery to the urgent conversations on justice and community safety. Led by federal prosecutors, this unit includes the FBI, USDA Office of Inspector General, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, and local Los Angeles law enforcement and animal control agencies.

Already in action, the task force has made its presence felt in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles, conducting outreach operations. During these operations, they not only ensured the welfare of animals by checking for access to clean water and food but also seized an abandoned dog, demonstrating their commitment to animal welfare and law enforcement. The community was also informed about essential resources, collars, and leashes, highlighting the task force's dual role in prevention and protection.
