Students and residents near the University of Pennsylvania’s campus have reported a series of attacks linked to a social media trend. People were struck in the head by groups of young individuals between 40th and 38th streets, from Market Street to Locust Street in University City. The university has issued warnings urging the community to stay alert and limit distractions, according to FOX 29.

A local business owner, Suran Casselle, told 6abc that both people and properties have been affected, including damage to his barber shop’s front door. Officials said the incidents, involving sudden hits with an open hand or closed fist, are linked to a social media trend. In response, the University of Pennsylvania’s Division of Public Safety is increasing police and security presence in the area and working with city partners to prevent more incidents.

The University of Pennsylvania announced safety measures, stating, "We will continue, as long as necessary, to take steps to stop these events from happening so members of our community can feel safe and unthreatened," as mentioned by FOX 29. Victims and witnesses are asked to report suspicious activity to PennComm at 215-573-3333. The university also advised minimizing distractions, staying aware of surroundings and exits, and using its 24-hour walking escort service if needed, as per PhillyVoice
