In a recent turn of events, an Upper Southampton Township Police Officer and the former Assistant Public Works Director are facing felony charges for their roles in a bid rigging and theft scheme. As uncovered by a Grand Jury investigation, the once-trusted public servants are accused of intentionally undervaluing township vehicles to subsequently purchase them at lower prices.
Derek J. Gale, a 47-year-old police officer from Morrisville, paired with 27-year-old Brandon F. Valentino of Chalfont, formerly the Assistant Public Works Director, is said to have collaborated to deceptively secure two decommissioned Ford Explorers through the Municipalbid auction website. The charges leveled against them include bid rigging and theft by deception, among other related felonies. According to a Bucks County Government announcement, both men were arraigned and released on unsecured bail.
The details of the case reveal a calculated effort to misuse the auction system to their own benefit. The extent of the conspiracy suggests that this was more than a one-off incident, pointing to a larger pattern of behavior where public resources were treated as means to personal ends. As the investigation continues, the township deals with the fallout of its former employees' actions.
While Gale has been put on paid administrative leave, Valentino's employment with the public works department was terminated. This comes as a stern reminder of the need for transparency and honesty in public service. "Gale and Valentino were charged with bid rigging, theft by deception, criminal conspiracy to commit theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking, criminal conspiracy to commit theft by unlawful taking, theft by receiving stolen property, criminal conspiracy to commit theft by receiving stolen property," the Bucks County Government statement detailed. Their arraignment was presided over by Magisterial District Judge Brian M. Marriott this past Tuesday.
The community awaits the judicial proceedings with a keen eye on how the case will unfold and what it means for the integrity of local government operations. For now, the two men face the legal consequences of their actions as the justice system moves forward to hold them accountable.
