Wake County is seeking local businesses, schools, and nonprofits interested in reducing their waste footprint. The Wake County Division of Solid Waste & Recycling has opened applications for its Waste Prevention Grant Program, offering up to $10,000 in financial assistance to initiatives focused on diverting trash from landfills.

As per the Wake County release, grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 are designated for projects that reduce waste and promote recycling, reuse, and composting efforts within the county. The application window is open until Nov. 14. All applicants must be based in Wake County and complete their projects within a year, with extensions possible under certain conditions. Video interviews with past recipients are available to provide examples of successful projects, including Wakefield High School’s DECA club, which collected food waste to create compost, and MyMatR, which introduced an AI-assisted bin for waste sorting.

Those interested in applying or learning more can attend free webinars conducted by Bianca Howard, who can be reached at [email protected]. A webinar is scheduled for today from noon to 12:45 p.m., with additional sessions planned for Thursday next week, and on September 15.

Since 2004, the Waste Reduction Grant Program has supported various organizations working to reduce waste. For example, El Centro Hispano used its grant to establish a workplace recycling initiative that included a Spanish-language educational campaign to improve recycling practices in the communities it serves.
