Residents of Wake Forest have the opportunity to share a cup of joe with their local officers during the upcoming "Coffee with a Cop" event. Wake Forest Police Department is setting up at Stewart's Bistro, located at 3652 Rogers Road, on Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m., where community members can chat with law enforcement in an informal setting. The department announced the initiative as a way to foster stronger relationships outside of high-stress situations that typify most police interactions.
The “Coffee with a Cop” program has become a national trend, supported by The US Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. It is designed to remove barriers between police officers and the community they serve by facilitating an atmosphere where one-on-one interactions can take place in neutral territory. According to the Wake Forest announcement, these events are crucial because most of the contacts law enforcement officers have with the public happens during emergencies or emotional situations, which are "often not the best times to build relationships."
Diverse members of the Wake Forest law enforcement team will be present to respond to community questions and introduce themselves to residents.
The rules for the Monday meet-up are simple: come ready to have a conversation, learn more about the WFPD, but it's discouraged to make speeches or air grievances during this coffee rendezvous. This is less about formal discourse and more about informal, friendly discussion. Future "Coffee with a Cop" events have already been planned to occur over the next several months at various shops and restaurants throughout the Wake Forest area, indicating a sustained effort to nurture police-community bonds.
