The aftermath of a shooting that occurred last year has led to a homicide investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Northwest Washington, D.C. The shooting, which initially took place on October 2, 2024, left a man critically injured by multiple gunshot wounds. According to the MPD's official statement, after gunfire was reported, first responders found the victim at the 1200 block of North Capitol Street, Northwest. He was quickly transported to a local hospital to receive urgent care for his life-threatening injuries.

Following the incident, the MPD managed to swiftly locate and apprehend the suspect. On November 13, 2024, Damon Bradford, a 27-year-old man from the same area, was arrested by the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Bradford was charged, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, with Assault with Intent to Kill While Armed. However, as the victim, 36-year-old Kevin Dextraze, has since succumbed to his injuries, investigators are now faced with the stark task to possibly seek upgraded charges.

Despite the initial efforts of medical professionals, Dextraze's battle with the consequences of the shooting has come to a standstill. As reported on the MPD's news release, on September 7, 2025, Dextraze died. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled his death a homicide as consequence of complications from the 2024 gunshot wound he sustained during the incident in question.

Detectives from the MPD's Homicide Branch are currently coordinating with the United States Attorney’s Office to thoroughly examine all available avenues and to appropriately upgrade charges against Bradford.
