Wayne State University is looking for a new president after Kimberly Andrews Espy resigned following two years in the position. Espy, the university’s first female president, submitted her resignation before a special Board of Governors meeting. According to The Detroit News, her departure comes during a year of administrative challenges, including her decision to place School of Medicine Dean Wael Sakr on paid leave, which the board criticized. Acting Dean David Rosenberg later resigned, citing concerns with how the process was handled.
Wayne State University is preparing for a leadership change after Rosenberg’s resignation, with the Board of Governors planning a public special meeting to discuss “leadership transition plans currently underway,” as reported by Michigan Public. Jennifer Sheridan Moss, president of the Wayne Academic Union, noted the disruption of another presidential search, and Michigan State University Professor Brendan Cantwell said university presidents face growing pressures and stronger board involvement.
Data from the Michigan Association of State Universities, cited by Bridge Michigan, showed a small increase in overall enrollment during Kimberly Andrews Espy’s tenure. The impact of her resignation on these trends is not yet clear, as Wayne State University and other institutions continue to face challenges related to leadership turnover and long-term stability in higher education.
