Residents across the Western US should brace for a medley of weather changes this week, according to the latest from the National Weather Service (NWS). As disturbances make their way across the West Coast and into the Great Basin, the anticipation of isolated showers and storms along with gusty winds is on the horizon. A 20 to 40% chance of precipitation hits regions from the eastern Sierra to the southern Great Basin, while other areas should expect the typical dry and breezy conditions that are common this time of year.
The National Weather Service reports that the first in a series of shortwaves will approach the West Coast today, rolling through the Great Basin tomorrow. This disturbance is set to bring not only the possibility of rain but also wind gusts ranging from 15 to 25 mph this afternoon. While the showers may not reach all corners of the region, the gusty winds seem to have a more comprehensive guest list, slated to breeze through each afternoon. A cut-off low is also expected later in the week, bringing cooler temperatures that seem to decide to linger around through the weekend.
Aviators, take note: the NWS has laid down the details with no significant weather impacts expected for Harry Reid International Airport during the current TAF period. Winds are anticipated to remain light, mainly obeying the usual daily patterns with only a slim chance of them picking up. Overhead, expect a few scattered clouds to decorate the sky at approximately 10,000 feet as dry conditions resume.
For those outside Vegas, especially folks dwelling in the Owens Valley and southwestern Great Basin, NWS forecasts "gusty south winds of 20-30 knots" as well as isolated showers and storms, in contrast to the arid peace elsewhere. Post-sunset should bring respite, with winds calmly laying down to rest and stormy fervor ceasing. The skies are expected to showcase a few to scattered clouds sitting comfortably above 8,000 feet, notably denser where rain might be on the play bill.
Finally, the NWS hasn't forgotten the committed weather spotters among us, calling on them to report any significant happenings in line with standard protocols. You can view the full forecast and keep up with all updates on the NWS website at NWS - Las Vegas Weather Forecast.
