The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a series of public open houses this fall at four fish hatcheries and spawning facilities across the state. These events will provide information on how healthy fish populations are maintained in Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers.

According to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources press release, the series begins on September 27 at the Governor Tommy G. Thompson Fish Hatchery in Spooner. The event will feature hatchery tours, family activities, and demonstrations of fish pumping, a key part of the stocking process. It will be held at 951 West Maple Street starting at 10 a.m.

On October 11, two additional facilities will hold open houses. The Besadny Anadromous Fish Facility in Kewaunee will demonstrate salmon egg collection and offer wagon rides in partnership with the Algoma Kewaunee Great Lakes Sport Fishermen. The Root River Steelhead Facility in Racine will provide guided tours and spawning demonstrations at 2200 Domanik Drive, Lincoln Park, along with fishing technique tutorials from local organizations such as Salmon Unlimited and Trout Unlimited.

The final event is scheduled for October 25 at the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery, N5871 State Road 22. It will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include workshops on casting, fish identification, and activities such as fish printing on tote bags.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources encourages the public to attend these events to learn more about fish hatcheries and their role in supporting Wisconsin’s aquatic resources.
