The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is making more than 6 million acres of public land available for hunting this season. The areas include a variety of habitats, from forests to open fields, providing opportunities for hunters across the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources offers mobile-friendly online maps to help hunters find state, federal, county, and Voluntary Public Access lands. The Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides payments to landowners who allow public hunting on their property. Hunters are advised to check if areas are open and follow regulations before going out.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources advises hunters on public lands to prepare for changing conditions and shared spaces by scouting the area for wildlife signs, knowing designated hunting zones, following leave no trace rules, and wearing blaze orange during gun seasons except for waterfowl hunting. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources states, "Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Be certain of your target, what’s before it and what’s beyond it. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot."
