A 23-year-old man lost his life after a stabbing incident at a Kroger store in Southgate. The event occurred shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday, leading to the man being taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Southgate police have said that the suspect, believed to be an employee of the grocery chain, was taken into custody at the scene, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
Witnesses described the scene with clarity despite the chaos. "I just heard some screaming and yelling and I didn't pay much attention to it. I was kind of like what's going on?" said Devin Rocz, a shopper at Kroger, in a statement obtained by WXYZ. While shopping, Rocz stumbled upon the aftermath of the altercation, recounting the victim's bleeding and the collective shock that ensued.
Police said the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The Kroger store at 16705 Fort Street remains closed as the investigation continues. In a report from WXYZ, the company expressed condolences and emphasized its commitment to customer and employee safety. A spokesperson for Kroger stated, "We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred in our store today, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family."
"There was blood everywhere. The victim was sitting in a chair. He was obviously very hurt," Karina Nimer, who entered the store just as the commotion erupted, told WXYZ. Nimer witnessed the suspect, adorned in a red vest, running toward her before reportedly being subdued by law enforcement authorities.
Additional details about the victim and the suspect have not been publicly disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.
