As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly present in educational settings, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has collaborated with Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic to equip teachers with the skills to use the technology. This initiative, backed by substantial funding from the tech companies, seeks to create the National Academy for AI Instruction, a dedicated training center for educators focused on AI.

In New York City, the AFT’s collaboration with major tech companies offers a combination of virtual and in-person workshops, supported by $23 million in funding, according to Gothamist. The program focuses on the safe and ethical use of AI, aiming to enhance instructional methods rather than replace teachers. Vincent Pilato, the academy’s chief operating officer, addressed concerns about AI’s role in education by stating, "It's our newest tool in our toolbox."

Some educators have expressed concerns about the impact of introducing advanced technology into classrooms. AFT President Randi Weingarten acknowledged these concerns during discussions with the tech industry, highlighting the importance of collaborating with companies that can provide the necessary resources, according to ABC News. "There is no one else who is helping us with this. That’s why we felt we needed to work with the largest corporations in the world," Weingarten said.

Concerns have been expressed by educators like Kyle DeAngelis, who sent a letter to Weingarten. DeAngelis stressed the need for a platform that supports educators in adopting AI tools while also fostering ongoing dialogue about the broader implications of the technology. Pilato responded to these concerns in the same interview with Gothamist, saying, "Everyone has concerns, and we’re going to address them," and emphasized that the role of educators remains central.

Microsoft CEO Brad Smith provided significant funding to the AFT and emphasized that educators should maintain a "healthy dose of skepticism" regarding the role of tech companies. Additionally, the National Education Association has partnered with Microsoft and announced plans to train thousands of its members in AI literacy, according to ABC News.

Investments from major technology companies highlight the growing role AI is expected to play in the education sector. As collaborations between tech firms and educational organizations develop, various AI applications, such as improving lesson plans and supporting diverse learners, are becoming more apparent, demonstrating the potential of integrating education with advanced technology.
