The City of Boulder is taking strides to optimize its transit system by reconfiguring sections of Arapahoe Avenue for better bus and vehicular flow. Starting October 23, lanes on the stretch between 28th Street and Cherryvale Road will transform to serve buses and right-turning vehicles exclusively. This move seeks to ease the transit experience for commuters and enhance safety for all street users. As reported by the City of Boulder, this project aligns with the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT) resurfacing work on east Arapahoe Avenue, and the coordination aims to utilize taxpayer funds more efficiently while minimizing the construction's impact on the community.
The implementation phase is set to be completed over two sets of dates, the first being Oct. 23-24 and the second on Nov. 6-7, weather permitting. The premise is that dedicated bus and turn lanes will result in faster and more reliable bus services. In addition, it will reduce conflicts vehicles have with buses and streamline right turns into driveways and intersections. The city anticipates these changes will foster safer and more accessible routes for businesses lining the avenue.
Nighttime traffic may face disruptions, including partial lane closures. Flaggers will be deployed to maintain a smooth flow of traffic during these times. Notably, despite the construction work enveloping the area, access to local properties and businesses will not be hindered, ensuring that daily operations for residents and patrons face minimal interruptions.
