Governor Josh Stein has announced that Ahold Delhaize USA will invest $860 million in Burlington to build a new, modern distribution center serving grocery brands along the East Coast. The project is expected to create 120 jobs in Guilford County during its first phase, with the potential to grow to more than 500 positions at the Burlington site.
Ahold Delhaize USA has long maintained a strong presence in North Carolina. Governor Josh Stein welcomed the company’s new investment, stating in a press release, “Food Lion has years of experience feeding North Carolina." He added, "We are excited that Ahold Delhaize USA has chosen to double down on its investment in the state and establish this important new facility in Burlington.” Construction on the $860 million distribution center is expected to begin in 2026, with operations scheduled to start in 2029.
Ahold Delhaize USA Chief Executive Officer JJ Fleeman stated that the investment is intended to support the company’s growth and job creation in North Carolina. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said the company’s decision to expand in the state followed an evaluation of other potential locations.
The new distribution center is expected to generate an annual payroll impact of more than $10.7 million. The state is supporting the project with a $250,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund. N.C. Representative Alan Branson described the project as the largest capital investment in the Burlington area.
Senator Phil Berger highlighted the collaboration behind the project, noting that the new Ahold Delhaize USA fulfillment center will bring hundreds of jobs and significant revenue to North Carolina. The project involves cooperation among several organizations, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and various educational institutions and local chambers of commerce.
