In a coordinated effort by California law enforcement, $200,000 worth of stolen Apple products were recovered following a traffic stop on a white cargo van in Los Angeles. The van, reportedly involved in a burglary in Sparks, Nevada, was under surveillance after Nevada authorities issued a "be on the lookout" alert earlier in the day, as detailed in a KTLA report.
Traveling on the 5 Freeway near Western Avenue, the van was spotted by LA County Sheriff’s Department helicopter crews, who subsequently notified the California Highway Patrol. A traffic stop was conducted at around 3:40 p.m., resulting in the discovery of thousands of dollars' worth of Apple merchandise and the arrest of both suspects inside the van, said the authorities who were notified about a large stash of Apple merchandise inside the van in an NBC Los Angeles article.
The ongoing investigation hopes to shed more light on the specifics of the theft and the types of products retrieved. Authorities from Sparks, Nevada, reported that the suspects had earlier broken into a commercial vehicle at a truck stop, leading to their swift communication to California agencies about the incident, as CBS News Los Angeles covered.
CHP expressed their dedication to combating theft, with CHP Southern Division Chief Chris Margaris stating, "Cargo theft, retail theft, and crime in general will not be tolerated in California." As per details obtained by KTLA, Margaris further emphasized, “The CHP maintains an active role in fighting cargo and retail theft across our great State. We collaborate with allied agencies nationwide, and we will employ all our available resources to ensure the integrity and safety of our state’s transportation system, commerce, and consumers.” While the suspects, described only as males, were taken into custody, their identities have remained concealed in the truck with the stolen goods.
