The East Lansing Police Department has identified the woman found in the Red Cedar River as 32-year-old Meagan Turner, a Canadian doctoral student at Michigan State University. Her body was recovered from the river last Monday, east of Cedar Village near the MSU campus, according to CBS News Detroit.
Police investigating Turner's death stated there is currently no evidence of foul play. Authorities are awaiting toxicology reports, which may take two to four weeks, to clarify the cause of death, and Turner's family has been informed. While drugs or alcohol have not yet been ruled out as contributing factors, Police Chief Jen Brown said, "ELPD will continue to investigate all options and leads in this case, but we do not have reason at this point to believe there is an ongoing risk to public safety," as reported by WILX.
In October 2021, 18-year-old MSU student Brendan Santo was found dead in the same river and died from accidental drowning, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 and no other substances in his system, as mentioned by FOX 2 Detroit. Authorities are investigating the recent death of Turner and are waiting for toxicology results. The East Lansing Police Department asks anyone with information to come forward.
