Commuters, look forward to a smoother ride on CO 112 as the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), in collaboration with United Companies, has wrapped up the resurfacing project from Del Norte to the US 285 junction. The much-anticipated completion rolled out on Wednesday, Oct. 15, bringing to an end the work that has spanned approximately 13 miles of roadway.

For those who regularly traverse the CO 112, this overhaul promises to make the commute and transportation of goods just a bit less of a hassle. "CO 112 is a busy highway for south-central Colorado travelers," said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Julie Constan. To quickly update the infrastructure, crews have labored to mill the aged asphalt surface, lay down a mixture of recycled and new asphalt in three applications, and swiftly execute bridge repairs, as outlined by CDOT.

The revamping extended from the US Highway 160/CO 112 intersection, Mile Point 0, to the CO 112/US 285 junction, MP 13.2, bolstering a critical passage for local commuters, agriculture, and freight drivers who depend on this corridor as an efficient connector and rural bypass through the San Luis Valley. Moreover, the improvements were not confined to the road itself; coordination with Union Pacific Railroad was necessary for rail repairs, while the City of Del Norte played a key part in utility repairs, enhancing the overall reliability of the route.

Julie Constan emphasized the significance of the route, stating, "Local commuters, as well as agriculture and freight drivers, use this as an efficient connector and rural bypass route when traveling through the San Luis Valley." The new resurfacing, she added, "will make this valuable alternative route more reliable for Valley travelers." These statements further confirm the intended impact of the project to ensure a steadfast conduit for the movement of people and goods amidst the demands of South-Central Colorado's transportation needs, as per CDOT.
