In the ongoing case against former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, another chapter unfolds as co-defendant Sheldon Wetherholt is expected to modify his plea in court. Slated for today's plea hearing at 1:30 p.m., Wetherholt faces charges stemming from an alleged illegal gambling ring, according to a report by ClickOrlando. Wetherholt, who has previously denied meeting Lopez, was arrested along with several others, including Lopez and his wife, on accusations of racketeering and conspiracy linked to establishing the gambling operation.
Wetherholt, believed by authorities to be the casino's manager, is indicted with one count each of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering, with allegations of aiding in the setup of leases and utilities for the gambling house. According to details from WESH, Wetherholt’s anticipated plea would mark him as the second individual in this saga to strike a deal with prosecutors, following Carol Cote, associated with the casino's bookkeeping. Cote's agreement, reported last week, involves her guilty plea on similar charges and cooperating with the state in ongoing legal proceedings.
This legal tangle stems from allegations against Marcos Lopez, who prosecutors claim used his law enforcement position to shield the illicit enterprise, profiting substantially in the process. As Wetherholt prepares for his plea hearing, Lopez's defense team is also on the move, seeking to separate his case from other co-defendants and to relocate his trial back to Osceola County, as per the information from a hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
