On the busy streets of Columbus, an incident that disrupted the usual ebb and flow of commerce took place last week. According to a social media post from the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded to a robbery report on North High Street on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 22. A store manager reported an act of theft by an individual, who is said to have taken merchandise without settling the bill.
At approximately 12:14 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of N. High St on a report of a suspect stealing from a business situated in the 2000 block. Wearing a bright orange jacket, which stands out like a sore thumb on a day met with the quiet shuffle of pedestrian traffic, the suspect was accused of stuffing store goods before exiting the premises without payment. "The store manager stated that when the male exited the store, another store employee attempted to stop the male when he started punching at her," detailed the report from the Columbus Division of Police.
In what unfolded next, the suspect, whom officers later identified as Anntwon Allen, dodged the store employees and fled on foot. However, he did not make it far. An Ohio State University officer, keeping a vigil on the northeast corner of N. High St. and Lane Ave. intercepted Allen. This move, from a position of watchful oversight, effectively put an end to the chase.
Upon detaining the individual, the officers proceeded with swift action, booking Mr. Allen on charges related to the robbery incident. As revealed by the Columbus Division of Police, "Mr. Allen was taken into custody and charged with robbery out of this incident." The arrest serves as a reminder that, even as we navigate through the thoroughfares of our daily routines, there are moments where the order is disrupted and the law steps in to restore balance.
