North Carolina's roadways and infrastructure are ushering in a new chapter with Daniel H. Johnson taking the helm as the State Transportation Secretary. Following his swearing-in on October 1, Johnson steps into a role previously held by Joey Hopkins, who retired after more than three decades with the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The promotion, set in motion by Gov. Josh Stein's appointment in September, marks a shifting tide in the state's transportation leadership.
According to a press release from the NCDOT, Johnson's docket is teeming with pressing tasks. Top of the list? Hurricane Helene recovery efforts that have left parts of North Carolina's infrastructure in dire need of attention. Equally important, is the mandate to improve operations within the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles – a behemoth of bureaucracy often beleaguered by inefficiencies. Moreover, Johnson is also charged with the twin challenge of retaining, and attracting a skilled workforce at NCDOT, ensuring that the department is not just a revolving door but a hallmark for career transportation professionals.
The Governor's office is optimistic about the change in leadership. Johnson is described as a seasoned professional with a track record that inspires confidence in his capacity to steer the department through the thickets of infrastructure woes and bureaucratic reform. Gov. Stein, in his remarks, underscored the importance of Johnson's role in keeping North Carolina moving, saying, our infrastructure is pivotal to our state's growth and well-being. I am confident that Secretary Johnson is the right leader to build on the department's successes and navigate the challenges ahead.
