During the ongoing federal government shutdown, the District of Columbia Council passed the Let Our Vows Endure (LOVE) Act to maintain marriage services despite the closure of the federally funded DC Superior Court. The emergency legislation authorizes the mayor to issue marriage licenses during the shutdown, as per the Council of the District of Columbia release.
The Council unanimously approved the measure seven days into the shutdown. Nine Councilmembers voted in favor of the emergency bill, which is effective for 90 days, along with the first of two votes on a temporary version lasting 225 days. The mayor has already signed the emergency bill, and the second vote on the temporary measure is expected soon.
Some legislative items were postponed due to the shutdown, including the Rebalancing Expectations for Neighbors, Tenants, and Landlords (RENTAL) Act, a youth curfew bill, and a proposal to adjust green building standards for government housing projects. These topics are scheduled for discussion at the rescheduled Legislative Meeting on Tuesday next week.
In addition to the LOVE Act, the Council passed several other measures, such as designating the District as the Official Sports Capital of the United States and creating a Youth Advisory Council on Climate Change and Environmental Conservation. The Council also approved reforms to business licensing and measures recognizing contributions to the community and local infrastructure.
The Council’s actions ensure the continuation of essential local functions and services during the federal government shutdown. A full list of approved and postponed measures is available on the DC Council’s official website.
