Tragedy struck Montclair in the early hours of Tuesday morning when a dispute led to a deadly car crash and a subsequent kidnapping. According to NBC Los Angeles, one person has died and another was initially taken captive after a confrontation escalated dangerously.
Montclair Police Department officials reported that around 12:45 a.m. on Benson Avenue, a verbal argument between several individuals turned into a high-speed chase through the city streets. The suspect, who was in pursuit of the victims, is said to have begun shooting at their vehicle during the chase. Eventually, the assailant rammed the vehicle, causing it to crash into a tree, as told by the Montclair Police Department through a Facebook post.
All the involved parties knew each other in some capacity, though full details of their relationship remain unclear. The collision resulted in one unresponsive victim who was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while two others attempted to flee on foot. The suspect was able to kidnap one of the fleeing victims—a woman—who thankfully managed to escape in Ontario and receive hospital treatment. The other individual who ran from the crash site is still missing.
Police have not yet released the identities of the victims or the 40-year-old male suspect. Multiple outlets, including KTLA, have reported a manhunt is underway to apprehend the suspect responsible for the incident. The area of the crash was near a local school and has been cordoned off for investigation. Given the violent nature of the confrontation, police seem confident that this was not a random incident.
The Montclair Police Department is actively seeking information, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward. Witnesses can contact them directly or may choose to remain anonymous by using the WeTip Hotline. As the community reels from this act of violence, law enforcement officers continue tirelessly to piece together the events that led up to such a catastrophic outcome.
