In a forceful condemnation of the recent skyrocketing health insurance premiums, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark has accused the Republican Party, and particularly Mike Johnson, of neglecting their responsibilities to the American public. During a hearing held by the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, Clark did not mince words when she highlighted the GOP's actions, which included sweeping cuts to crucial health programs and a subsequent government shutdown. According to her public statement, these decisions have led to dire financial straits for many American families.
"Look around. Look at what the Republicans have inflicted on the American people. Cuts to Medicare. Cuts to Medicaid. Cuts to the Affordable Care Act. Cuts to children’s health insurance. Cuts to medical research. All of this, all of this, to take that money and give it to the very wealthiest in the form of tax cuts," Clark said. Amid these cuts, Clark argued, the government shutdown engineered by the Republicans further aggravated the crisis, leaving countless individuals and families grappling with financial uncertainty, as noted by the press release.
Clark drew specific attention to the impact of these policies in Benton, Louisiana, right in the heart of Representative Mike Johnson's district, where a couple with an annual income of $88,000 would see their insurance premiums leap from under $7,500 to more than $23,000. The sharp increase was prompted by Republicans' decision to rescind tax credits for the Affordable Care Act, thereby forcing insurance companies to hike premiums. "This is hurting everyone. Cancer survivors. Small businesses. Moms and children," Clark declared, also highlighting that 267,000 veterans would face insurance loss as a direct result of the premium increases, according to the same press release.
Clark further criticized Republican leadership for refusing to negotiate or attend proceedings, calling their inaction irresponsible. She denounced Speaker Johnson’s characterization of health care concerns as merely a “show vote” as disrespectful, stressing that the GOP’s disorganization has left servicemembers at risk of missing paychecks amid the ongoing government standoff.
In her closing remarks, Clark urged Republican lawmakers to recognize the anxiety and sense of betrayal felt by their constituents and to return to Washington to address the mounting crisis. Emphasizing the need for swift, bipartisan action to prevent further financial hardship for American families, she ended with a pointed message that the situation has reached its breaking point.
