O'Brien, CPA, has rolled out the 2026 Audit Plan, detailing a strategy to tackle potential inefficiencies and waste within the city's governance amid a notable budget shortfall. Facing a staggering $250 million deficit, Denver is posed with making tough financial decisions, which include cuts and layoffs, underscoring the importance of rigorous audits. As reported by the Denver Auditor's Office, this year's audit program aims to shine a light on how public funds are being managed and spent and whether those expenditures are lining up with community needs.
In an agenda that prioritizes "auditing what matters," the plan seeks to dissect various city projects and operations. Among the items slated for review are All In Mile High and House1000 initiatives, amid a dire homelessness situation that demands not just financial, but humanitarian consideration. They're also peering into the city's budget processes, aiming to assess the transparency and the fairness in fund allocations. As Denver grapples with financial blight, the conventional wisdom may be that efficiency and cautious spending are more paramount than ever before; however, by the nature of governance, there's always some form wriggle room for discrepant priorities and incidental waste.
O'Brien pledges a commitment to accountability. "We carefully selected every audit in the plan to ensure the city is spending taxpayer dollars responsibly and to address issues our community is concerned about,” O’Brien stated, as per the Denver Auditor's Office. Audits of public safety-related contracts, the Vision Zero Bikeway Projects, and the maintenance shift of new parks to Denver Parks & Recreation are all on the table. The ambitious audit roster also includes a look at the city's growing reliance on artificial intelligence, as well as how Denver is managing the digital skills and staffing needed to keep city services cyber secure and reliable.
