At the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the latest 2-mile installment of the Joe Louis Greenway, Detroit residents and city officials gathered together to admire more than just the newly developed paths and the added green space. A significant moment was marked with the unveiling of a new bronze statue of Joe Louis, not only commemorating the boxing legend's prowess in the ring but also celebrating his lesser-known impact on the world of golf. According to an announcement by the City of Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan and Joe Louis' daughter, Joyce Barrow-Henderson, revealed the statue that stands as a testament to Louis' role in desegregating American golf.

Located at a trailhead in Detroit, the statue is part of a larger, 27-mile greenway project featuring various amenities such as lighting, safety call boxes, and places for public gathering. "The spirit that never quits that’s what this statue means to me," Joyce Barrow-Henderson told the City of Detroit in an interview, emphasizing its significance not just for golf enthusiasts but for dreamers and families. Having opened nearly six miles so far, the Greenway project is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2026.

Over five months, Detroit artist Austen Brantley crafted the statue titled "Outside the Ring," recognizing Louis' endeavors outside his boxing career, specifically his participation in a PGA-sanctioned tournament and the establishment of the Joe Louis Open Tournaments. The statue was commissioned to immortalize Louis' efforts to open doors for Black golfers in PGA tournaments, said Rochelle Riley, Director of Arts and Culture, in a statement released by the City of Detroit.

A neighbor and churchgoer along the greenway, Gerald Jeter saw the project as both a physical and metaphorical connector, reflecting Joe Louis' unifying legacy beyond sports. Leona Medley, Executive Director of the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how the Greenway's newly minted segments were crafted with community feedback, ensuring it serves as more than just a pathway but as a bridge connecting various Detroit neighborhoods and fostering inclusivity. Further, the project fortifies its roots in the city's African American legacy, joining other notable public art installations under Detroit ACE initiatives.

The Joe Louis Greenway, a far-reaching endeavor stretching across 29 miles, aims to link Detroit's neighborhoods while simultaneously honoring the city's history and promoting equality through accessible shared spaces. Since the Greenway's construction began, the General Services Department has tackled significant clean-up efforts, as stated by the City of Detroit.
