A Detroit firefighter sustained injuries early this morning after a terrifying plunge through the floor during a house fire. The incident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. in the 14200 block of Corbett, near Chalmers, where flames engulfed the first and second floors of an apparently vacant house. According to ClickOnDetroit, while engaged in the battle against the inferno from inside, the firefighter fell from the first floor into the basement beneath.
The Detroit Fire Department was quick to act following a mayday call – a distress signal signaling that firefighters had lost sight of each other, FOX 2 Detroit reports. The injured firefighter was swiftly recovered from the basement and required immediate medical attention for his burn injuries. In spite of the perilous accident, he is expected to recover fully.
No other injuries were reported from the scene of the fire. Rescue crews diligently extinguished the fire by 6:45 a.m., as noted by ClickOnDetroit. The burned residence was observed to be empty prior to crews arriving on site, with fire emanating predominantly from the rear of the structure.
The firefighter received treatment for his injuries at Detroit Receiving Hospital and is anticipated to make a recovery, CBS News Detroit shared. The crews cleared the scene around 7:00 a.m. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, fortunately, the coordinated efforts of the fire department mitigated further disaster and loss.
