The City of Detroit is gearing up to empower its residents with critical skills in emergency response. Beginning October 9, Detroiters will have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, as announced by the City's Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHSEM). The program aims to furnish locals with skills including basic medical treatment, disaster preparedness, and life-saving techniques — all at no charge to the participants.
With disasters looming as perpetual threats over urban backdrops, the CERT training offers not just individual empowerment, but an investment in community resilience. Conducted by DHSEM, the free CERT training encompasses a variety of essential skills. Participants will delve into subjects such as disaster medical operations, fire safety, and the usage of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). On their agenda, also, is learning how to bandage wounds and treat an array of injuries from burns to hypothermia. Bolstered by such knowledge, Detroiters stand to become invaluable assets in times of crisis, the training set to stretch their abilities to shield and save within those moments that teeter on the brink of chaos and calm.
The classes, designed for maximal accessibility, are scheduled for October 9 and 10 from 5 - 8 p.m., and the following Saturdays, October 11 and 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The venue selected for this civic initiative is the Eastside Community Network at 4401 E. Conner. A completion certificate awaits those who attend all four sessions – a testament to their dedication and newfound capabilities, a herald of the greater security they bring into the fold of their communities.
Interested individuals are encouraged to claim a seat for this potentially lifesaving instruction. "The training will be conducted by the Detroit Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management," as stated on the City of Detroit's official announcement. To register, citizens can dial (313) 596-1742, and further information on the CERT training can be sought at detroitmi.gov/dhsem by navigating to the Community Emergency Response Team section.
